Asian Organizers Therapy Fund

Lotus Therapy Fund

Free therapy to support your path to healing.

There are many paths to healing, and often therapy is an important step on the journey. But cost, navigating insurance, and managing billing can all be barriers to getting the mental health care we need and deserve.

That’s why several times a year, we open the application for the Lotus Therapy Fund (LTF). Our goal is to remove barriers for Asian adults in need of individual therapy.

For those accepted, we offer 8 free sessions of virtual or in-person therapy over 3 months.

You’re able to choose one of the approved therapists from our directory who’s licensed in your state. Once you find a therapist who’s a good fit, we manage payment directly so you don’t have to.

The LTF application is currently open.

The Need

Asian Americans are the racial group least likely to seek services for mental health support—three times less likely than their white counterparts. At the same time Asian Americans age 15-24 are the only racial group with suicide as the leading cause of death

Despite the higher need for care, Asians are underrepresented in mental health professions: In 2021, only 4% of psychologists across the country identified as Asian American.

Additionally, cost is a major barrier to accessing mental health treatment. In 2024, the average cost for a therapy session without insurance was $143. Even with health insurance, many report difficulty in finding a therapist that accepts a particular insurance.

AMHC runs the Lotus Therapy Fund to help those who need it most to access care, in spite of obstacles. 8 sessions of therapy can provide noticeable improvement for clients: early symptoms can be reduced and habitual patterns may begin to shift.

Since 2023, LTF has funded 2,600+ therapy sessions for 672 individuals.

8 sessions of therapy over 3 months are completely free for LTF AND AOTF recipients.

The Lotus Therapy Fund ensures that Asian individuals in need receive quality mental health care. And it also guarantees that Asian therapists in our community are compensated fairly for their work, at a rate of $150 per session. We pay therapists directly, so you can concentrate less on billing and more on your own healing.

To help us expand how many people have access to the much-needed free therapy, please donate through our Donate To AMHC webpage.

Currently, Lotus Therapy Fund is only offered to our community members who are living in the U.S., and who are 18 years of age or older.  More details on AMHC and its work can be found here.

We know the need for therapy within our communities is great. However, because we receive a high volume of applicants, we unfortunately cannot accept everyone who applies. In reviewing your applications, we will take into account your current access to mental healthcare, including financial need, access to health insurance, severity of symptoms, availability of approved therapists in your U.S. state, and your ability to start therapy right away.

We typically provide application decisions within one week of the application close date.

Asian Organizers Therapy Fund

We heal with care and rest.

We understand that mental health support for organizers increases the health, resilience, and success of our community and our causes. To address this, AMHC, through generous funding from Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, hosts a therapy fund specifically for Asian organizers working to build social change.

The Asian Organizers Therapy Fund (AOF) covers 8 sessions of in-person or virtual therapy with an Asian therapist from our directory over a span of 3 months.

The Asian Organizers Fund application is currently closed.

The Need

We know that the community organizers working for economic, environmental, and social justice are helping us to build the world we want to live in. While organizing can be inspiring, fulfilling, and energizing, it can likewise be stressful, urgent, and demanding.

Ironically, while community organizers are fighting for a more just world for those around them, they are not often supported with the time or resources to heal, refresh, and care for themselves. AMHC recognizes that the health and wellbeing of organizers is essential to ensuring the sustainability of movements and for the transformation and social change we want to create.

8 sessions of therapy over 3 months are completely free for LTF AND AOTF recipients.

Being part of the Asian Mental Health Collective support group meant so much to me. I have never felt so seen and heard and validated. It’s forever changed my life.
Support Group Participant
I was able to meet an Asian American therapist who listens and understands my issues from the culture I am from. This has been a great experience identifying the root causes of my anxiety and addressing them.
Therapy Fund Recipient
I found my [8 sessions through AMHC] to be more effective than doing 14 months' of therapy via a well-known virtual therapy app.
