There is so much possibility and transformation that can happen in human connection, feeling truly seen and heard, and tapping into both your humanity and power. That is what therapy with me is all about.

Hello! I’m Dr. Alexandra Thurston (she/her), a licensed clinical psychologist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I provide compassionate and culturally affirming therapy to help you reclaim your voice, live a values-aligned life, and truly believe that you are enough.

My clients are often navigating the pain of disconnection – from themselves, important people in their lives, and the world around them. As a biracial Asian American woman, child of an immigrant, and parent, I understand how lonely and confusing it can be to feel “not enough” and live “in between worlds”, especially as you’re navigating different systems, expectations and beliefs. And so, I’ll listen to your story with genuine care and empathy, as we explore how to best support you.

Many of us were taught that we have to always hold everything together and never show any “weakness”. Part of how we shift and heal these intergenerational cycles, and forge a new path forward, is to begin to relate to ourselves in new ways. In our work together, we will create a gentle and brave space where you no longer feel like you have to do it all, hold it all, or figure it all out by yourself anymore. We were never supposed to do any of that in isolation. Together, we can help you gain more clarity about your patterns, relate to your experiences in more compassionate ways, and develop new coping skills so you can feel more grounded, connected, and empowered.

After working at UCSF for almost a decade, as well as other academic and medical institutions including Stanford, UC Berkeley, and CSULB, I have a deep understanding of the power dynamics, institutional barriers, and subsequent imposter syndrome that many high-achieving perfectionists from underrepresented backgrounds can face within these systems. Additionally, my own joys and challenges en route to and during parenthood inspired me to pursue a certification in perinatal mental health to support others in this time of life. I also truly love witnessing the transformation that occurs when couples learn to relate to each other in more vulnerable and compassionate ways. I am especially passionate about working with new or hopeful parents, intercultural/interracial couples, and couples where ADD/ADHD is present.

I offer sessions both in-person in San Francisco, CA, as well as virtually throughout CA, for your convenience. I know that your time and energy are limited and valuable. Once I receive your inquiry, I will get back to you within 1 business day so we can schedule a phone consultation and see if we are good match in moving forward together. I look forward to connecting with you!
