About Me
My name is Jenny Li and I am a mental health counselor in the State of New York. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychological Science from the University of California, Irvine, and my Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. I identify as Asian, Chinese, international student, and female, and I have lived in China, California, and now New York.
My Specialties
I have diverse experience supporting emerging adults, college populations, and international students, at various settings including college wellness/counseling centers and non-profits. Some issues I have attended to in the past are depression, anxiety, perfectionism, stress, identity, self-esteem, isolation, family/relationship issues, effective communication, healthy boundaries, school-related challenges, transitions, and trauma. I also pay special attention to what’s good/working and how we amplify positive resources such as positive emotions, character strengths, and meaning to promote therapeutic change and well-being. I am fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese (我可以提供中英双语咨询).
What Inspired Me To Be A Therapist
I personally went through therapy in the client’s seat during my undergraduate years, where I witnessed the power of psychotherapy and what can be achieved in this space. I see it as a great honor to be able to hold a safe space for my clients and support them in their growth journey. Such genuine human connection that can be fostered in a therapeutic relationship motivates me and allows me to find deeper meaning. I am also passionate about mental health advocacy and outreach.
My Approach
I look at mental health on a more holistic level, considering the complex historical, sociocultural, and environmental factors that are involved in one’s journey, while recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. I see counseling as a collaborative process and strive to hold a safe and growing space where my clients can feel seen and heard, and be their unapologetic selves. I work from a strength-based and client-centered perspective, believing my clients have what it takes to thrive and make changes. I am dedicated to providing individualized, tailored care per your unique needs and goals. I routinely ask about feedback, which helps me make relevant adjustments, and co-decide on how we want to move forward. I utilize an integrative approach to therapy, employing psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, positive psychology, REBT, ACT, art therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions, with a trauma-informed lens.
“I understand therapy can seem intimidating at first; remember, it is extremely normal to feel uncomfortable with the idea of sharing intimate details of your life with someone who is a complete stranger. We can be brave and strong, yet vulnerable and appreciate support. I also want to be transparent that healing can be messy and painful, but we are in this together!”
