Welcome to Self Care Stories, a blog series showcasing how different people take care of themselves around the world. In our lives, we often forget to prioritize our own well-being. We hope that by reading these stories, you feel inspired to build your own self-care routines because your own care is important.

Meet Alyssa!

What's your background?

Age: 22, Hometown : Los Angeles, CA; Current City: San Diego, CA; Current life: A senior in college, graduating in less than a month. I work at the tech desk at my school and intern at a Child Development Center. I love to cook, drink boba and hang out with my friends, especially now that I'm leaving San Diego to go back home.

What's your definition of self-care or what does self-care mean to you?

Self-care is the act of making sure that you are cared for in a personal way. To me, self-care is something that is important and necessary, no matter how minuscule or grand your self-care act is.

Tell me your story. How do you practice self-care in your life?

When I'm feeling overwhelmed, the first thing I do is take off all of my makeup and wash my face. Feeling refreshed from the water makes me calm down just a little. I usually crawl into bed and turn on Youtube, and watch vlogs. Vlogs have this way of making me relaxed as I just focus on others' lives instead of the chaos going on in my head, even just for a second.  I also enjoy just closing my eyes and listening to soft music, allowing myself to have some cognitive rest.

What makes taking care of yourself so important to you?

I never prioritized self-care until I went to college. It is important to me because it allows me to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of life and just be present with myself. We don't realize the amount of time we spend focusing on others and just taking the time to be with yourself allows you to learn more about your own needs.

If you had advice to give someone else on practicing self-care, what would it be?

Do it on a daily basis! Practicing self-care, even for 20 minutes a day, allows me to have a better outlook on each day. Take time to love yourself and reward yourself for the work that you do each day.

This series was created in collaboration with Self Caid. To find out more information on how to build a self-care routine, check out them out here.
